Checklist: First Steps to Take in Your New Greek Home
Whether the new place is a modern Athens apartment, a seaside property in Thessaloniki, or a traditional island home, moving in marks the start of something fresh. Before settling in for that first coffee, a handful of practical tasks deserve attention — they make the new home safer, more organized, and far less stressful from day one.
Set Up Your Utilities and Services
Electricity (DEI), water (EYDAP), internet, gas, and municipal waste services should all be connected and transferred into the new resident’s name, ideally live at least 24 hours before arrival.
Pest Control Before Unpacking
For homes that sat empty for a while, especially near the coast or in the countryside, a pest treatment before bringing in furniture is worth considering — particularly during the summer months.
Deep Clean the Space While It’s Empty
Bare floors and empty cabinets make this the easiest time to clean thoroughly: windows, baseboards, and corners; kitchen counters, handles, and appliances; bathrooms from top to bottom; and, where possible, replacing old toilet seats for a genuinely fresh start.
Know Your Emergency Controls
Getting familiar early with the fuse box and what each switch controls, the main water shut-off valves, and emergency exits (especially important in apartment buildings with shared stairwells) pays off if anything goes wrong later.
Test Fire Safety Devices
Checking smoke detectors, adding fresh batteries, and placing at least one fire extinguisher in the kitchen or near electrical panels are quick wins. Sharing escape plans with everyone in the household rounds out the basics.
Stock a Visible First Aid Kit
Minor cuts and falls happen often during unpacking. Keeping a first aid kit somewhere everyone can find it easily is a small but important step.
Secure the Property
Changing the door locks, especially in older buildings or rentals, is a simple way to add peace of mind — a peephole or smart lock is a worthwhile upgrade where possible.
Unpack the Essentials First
Opening a “first night” box right away — toilet paper, soap, and basic tools; snacks, cutlery, chargers, and medications; towels, toothbrushes, and bedding — makes the first evening far more comfortable.
Update the Address Everywhere
Notifying KEP, banks, mobile providers, delivery services, tax offices, and the relevant embassy (if applicable) keeps mail and official records moving smoothly.
Handling these tasks early builds a sense of safety and control right from the start. For more on furniture placement, see How to Create a Floor Plan, and for getting connected quickly, see How to Get the Best Deal on TV and Internet. Return to the Family Guide to Moving hub for more resources.
