What Not to Pack: Non-Transportable Items to Keep Out of Your Moving Shipment
Whether relocating within Athens, moving from Thessaloniki to Crete, or preparing for an international move, it’s crucial to know what cannot be included in the moving shipment. Allied — The Careful Movers Greece — follows strict safety and legal protocols to ensure every relocation is smooth and secure.
Certain household goods pose health, environmental, or regulatory risks and must never be packed for transport. Others, while not banned outright, are simply too valuable or irreplaceable to risk on a moving truck. Below is an expert checklist of non-transportable items for a move in or out of Greece.
What NOT to Pack or Transport
Hazardous Materials (Banned by Law)
The following are prohibited under EU and Greek transport regulations:
- Paints, varnishes, and nail polish remover
- Gasoline, lighter fluid, and propane cylinders
- Fireworks, matches, and flares
- Automotive fluids and industrial solvents
- Compressed gases and flammable aerosols
- Oxygen bottles and medical-grade cylinders
- Radio-pharmaceuticals or chemically reactive agents
These items may leak, explode, or ignite under pressure or high temperatures. Dispose of them at a certified hazardous waste center before the move.
High-Value and Sentimental Items
These personal assets should never go in the moving truck:
- Jewelry, cash, and collectibles such as coins or stamps
- Passports, birth certificates, wills, and contracts
- Wedding albums and irreplaceable family photos
- Prescription medication needed immediately
- Financial records, certificates, or investment documents
These items should stay with the household during the move, or be secured using a specialist courier or armored transport service.
Other Restricted Categories
- Firearms and ammunition — must be licensed and transported under Greek law with prior notice
- Perishable food items — especially in glass containers, which risk spoilage and breakage
- Open or half-used household chemicals — including bleach, detergent, or pesticides
